The Great Neighborhood Color Hunt

Hello friends!

When I am starting a brand new pattern, the hardest part is often deciding which colors to use. Should my next illustration be bright and loud, or soft and cozy? When my brain feels a little bit stuck, I like to play a game called the Color Hunt!

Here is how it works: I pick one single color—let's say, sunshine yellow—and I try to find as many things in that color as I can around my studio or out in the neighborhood. Once you start looking, it is amazing how much of one color you can find! A fuzzy yellow tennis ball, a shiny lemon in the fruit bowl, a bright yellow truck driving by, or a tiny dandelion peeking out of the sidewalk.

I draw quick little doodles of everything I find in my sketchbook. Suddenly, I have a whole page of funny, mismatched objects that look wonderful together just because they share the same color. It is a fantastic way to wake up your eyes and start seeing the world like an artist.

The next time you are feeling bored or need something fun to draw, try going on a Color Hunt of your own!

What color are you going to search for today?
